WHAT DOES A HEALTH COACH DO?

A Health Coach is a guide and mentor who empowers clients to take responsibility for their own health and supports them to implement and sustain lifestyle and behavior changes that will contribute to the achievement of their personal wellness goals. A Health Coach’s work is about integrating change into people’s lives, giving them things to try, and building on what they’ve done before. Coaches provide clients a bridge between foods and lifestyle, primary food “What That Means” and secondary food “What That Means”. Some common areas where a Health Coach may help a client to focus include weight management, food cravings, sleep, energy, stress management, and digestion--- just to name a few.

WHAT DOES A HEALTH COACH NOT DO?

A Health Coach does not take place of any medical practitioner; rather, he or she serves as a missing link---the patient guide---that helps develop strategies to enact real, lasting lifestyle changes that address not only the diagnostic label (e.g., pre-dia-betic), but also serve to enhance the client’s overall wellness.  There are many similarities with other professions, but health coaching is not better or worse, it’s just different. A Health Coach does not diagnose, treat, or take responsibility for bringing about wellness changes in a client’s life; rather, he or she guides and supports the development of and progress toward personal wellness goals. A Health Coach often works with generally healthy clients who may not necessarily be practicing many bad habits, but who are not practicing enough of good habits.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTON AND SUGGESTED ANSWERS

What is a Health History?

“During a typical consultation, we will spend about an hour going through your Health History, your goals for your health, and what you’ve always imagined for life. We will also get a sense of how it would be to work together. How does that sound?”

What is a Health Coach?

“ A Health Coach guides you to reach your health and life goals by making step-by-step changes to your food and lifestyle, at a pace that’s comfortable for you.”

What about confidentiality?

“Like any other health professional, I keep everything clients share with me strictly confidential.”

How does the program work?

“I work with clients in 6-month health coaching programs to reach their goals for their health and life. During the six months, I meet with my clients to create a plan, step-by-step, so they feel and look great. Together, we look at their current diet and lifestyle and customize a way to upgrade their food and other aspects of their life. I also offer my clients bonus materials, like books and handouts on health-related topics and other fun ideas to help

improve their health. Would you be interested in a free Health History consultation?”

Why is it six months?

“Studies show that if you do something for six months, it is much more likely to become a long-term habit. My goal is that after six months of working together with a client, they will have a deeper understanding of the foods and lifestyle that work best for them. I want them to take what they learn through working with me and use it for the rest of their life."
